Research Grant Award

2009-2010 Recipients

The Gonzaga Institute for Hate Studies announces the recipients of its first Research Grant Awards.

This year we decided to award two graduate student awards instead of one.

Michael Kincaid received an award for his research into Examining the Relationship between Helplessness and Hate. This research seeks to further understand the relationship between helplessness and hate through a qualitative research method involving a series of in-depth interviews. It is believed that the results of this research will make a contribution to the field of Hate Studies by providing a research based understanding of the relationship between helplessness and hate.

Carla Hasley received the second award for her project Impacts of Holocaust Mandated Education on Secondary Education Teachers. The Holocaust stands as a critical historical event used across grades, disciplines, and now generations to teach about power, race, and hatred. The research around Holocaust education overlooks the educators perspective, which is necessary to view in order to prepare and support them. The Washington State mandated curriculum is used as a catalyst for conversation to gain insight into the attitudes and views of teachers. A qualitative study will be conducted to understand the phenomenon of teaching the Holocaust.

JOURNAL

The Gonzaga Institute for Hate Studies advances the interdisciplinary field of Hate Studies and disseminates new theories, models, and discoveries about hate.

Hate Studies consists of inquiries into the human capacity to define, and then dehumanize or demonize, an “other,” and the processes that inform and give expression to, or can curtail, control, or combat, that capacity.
