	• 1936-37: Peak of purges in Caucasus region under Stalin, designed to obliterate any nationalist sentiment and insure Moscow control over Armenian CP. • In spite of political repression, Stalinist economic and social engineering made the Armenian people more industrialized, more literate, and more mobile, thus in a good position to benefit from Khrushchev's less onerous policies.
