The Five Pillars of the Islamic Faith

    The confession of faith.  "There is not God but Allah and Muhammad is his Prophet."
    Prayer five time a day, facing the direction of Mecca (where Muhammad built the Ka' ba).
    Fasting during the daylight hours of Ramadan (the time of Muhammad's revelations).
    Almsgiving (at least 2.5% of one's income) to the relief of the poor in your community.
    Pilgrimmage to Mecca at least once in one's lifetime.

    known for his generosity, truthfulness and sincerity
    at 40, received first revelations from God through the Angel Gabriel
    received revelations for next 23 years
    these are known as the Q'uran
    his followers suffered persecution
    driven to migrate (hijra) from Mecca to Medina in 622
