Service
Learning Component
Each of you will choose
a cause to be the subject of your service and activism. The
causes you may choose from are:
Community Activism and Training (Justice Club,
Spokane Neighborhood Alliance, Spokane
Alliance, Neighborhood Councils )
Labor Activism (UFCW, SEIU, USWA)
Service to Women/Children (Women's Hearth, TLC, Women's Justice Circles,
childcare for leadership institutes?)
Working for Global Economic Justice/Fair Trade (PJALs, Justice Club, Global Folk Art)
Community Partners
Community Partners
active in your cause are listed in parantheses after the name of the
issue. You will work with the community partner over the
course of the semester. Students must perform 3-4 hours per week of
service to the Community Partner. A total of 45
hours
of service is required.

Partners listed by cause, click here.
Keeping Track of
and Reflecting Upon Service
Each student will
complete
a Service Learning Contract with his/her Community Partner contact
enumerating the activities the student will participate in, the hours
of service,
etc. Student will keep track of his/her hours on the Service
Learning Hour Log to be turn in bi-weekly in class, every other Monday.
Students will also
journal about their service experiences by posting their journal
entries to Blackboard's Discussion Boards. One journal entry and
one response to some one else's journal entry is required each week.
At the conclusion of the semester, the student will complete self-assessment and an evaluation of the Community Partner and the Community Partner will complete an evaluation of the student. The forms for these will be provided by CCASL.
Presentations
Each Presentation Group will describe the service activities of its
members
over the course of the semester and suggest ways we can become
better informed about the issue, ways to become involved in service in
the issue area. Is there room for social entrepreneurism in your
issue?
Each
presentation should contain the following elements:
1. Problem Description. The presentation should begin with
a Problem Description describing the
nature of the problem(s) your community partners address.
2. Community Partners. Then, each presentation should present
information on your CommunityPartners and how these groups are
attempted to solve the problem you are addressing.
3. Your Service Learning. You should include a couple of
slides on each group member's Service Learning activities and how these
contribute to the community partner's goals.
4. Action Plan. Each presentation should conclude with an Action Plan, detailing what
we, as engaged
citizens of the globalized world, can do to help address the problem
explored by your group. The
Action Plan should touch upon several forms of civic engagement and
suggest actions appropriate to interational, national, state, and local
levels of government/problem solving.
