Course objectives: Chemistry 230 introduces the essential concepts of organic chemistry: bonding and structure, acidity and basicity, functional groups and nomenclature. Mechanisms of some fundamental organic reactions will be integrated into the course, as well as synthetic strategies. Many of the examples discussed will be relevant to biochemistry.

Grading: Your grade will be based on the following criteria (800 points total): Four in-class exams (100 points each); six quizzes (25 points each, low score dropped), homework and class participation (75 points), final exam (200 points). Grades will be assigned on the basis of percentage of possible points earned, roughly according to the following scheme: 90-100 A-/A; 80-89 B-/B/B+; 70-79 C-/C/C+; 60-69 D/D+; <60 F. Note that some adjustments to this scale may be made according to the class distribution of total scores.
