Walter R. Teets, Ph.D., CPA, is the 1997--8 Academic Accounting Fellow in the Office of the Chief Accountant of the Securities and Exchange Commission. The primary role of the Academic Fellow is to serve as an academic resource to the staff by interpreting and communicating extant research materials and relating them to the work of the Commission. The Academic Fellow also may be assigned directly to mainstream OCA projects, such as participating in conferences concerning registrant matters, interacting with private-sector professional accounting standard-setting bodies, or conducting reviews of Commission disclosure requirements.

Walter is also on the faculty of the School of Business Administration at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. He received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Chicago. Prior to joining the Gonzaga faculty in 1994, he was on the faculty at Washington University (St. Louis) and the University of Illinois - Urbana-Champaign. His research focuses on relations between accounting earnings and stock prices, statistical methods used in accounting research, and computer simulation of theoretical accounting models. He has made continuing profession education presentations on topics ranging from the use of the World Wide Web for accounting and auditing applications to accounting for stock options under Statement of Financial Accounting Standards No. 123, "Accounting for Stock-Based Compensation."

Walter is a member of the Washington Society of CPAs and the American Accounting Association.

Robert Uhl, CPA, began a two-year appointment as a Professional Accounting Fellow in the Office of the Chief Accountant of the Securities and Exchange Commission in June 1997. In this capacity, his responsibilities include participating in the development of rule proposals under the federal securities laws, acting as liaison with professional accounting standard-setting bodies, and consulting with SEC registrants. Areas of focus include financial instruments, leases and financial services industry matters.

Prior to joining the SEC, Bob spent ten years with Deloitte & Touche LLP, most recently as a senior manager in the firm's National Office Accounting Research Department. Bob began his career in Deloitte & Touche's Stamford, Connecticut office where he primarily served clients in the financial services industry.

Bob graduated from the State University of New York at Albany in 1987 with a B.S. degree in Accounting. He is a member of the AICPA and the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants.
