Inland Northwest Section of the American Chemical Society

Newsletter May 2001

Our next meeting will be a plant tour of Hollister-Stier's facility here in Spokane. It will also feature FREE PIZZA! There will be one order of business, and that is to ratify the changes to our bylaws. This will be done Before the FREE PIZZA! I need at least 20 members to have a quorum, so if FREE PIZZA is what it takes to get a few of you to come on down to one of these things, then FREE PIZZA is what you will get. Thursday, June 7th, 5:30 PM. Note the rather different time and place!!! (And also the FREE PIZZA!)

This meeting will be joint with the American Society of Quality. Our Chair Elect, Jeff Moore, happens to be a member of both societies, and also happens to work at Hollister Stier, and so was able to arrange both of these events.

This will be an informal discussion and tour of the manufacturing and quality processes involved in producing both biological and pharmaceutical products. Hollister-Stier was founded in 1921, and has been a leader in the development and manufacture of allergenic extracts, epinephrine injectors, diagnostic kits, and professional treatment supplies. Jeff Moore, an ASQ Certified Quality Engineer, will be guiding us through the facility. Jeff has a BS from Eastern Washington University in Chemistry/Biology, and has been an Analytical Quality Assurance Scientist for the company since 1996.

Driving Instructions: Traveling south on Market St., take a right on Garland/Empire. Make a left on Regal and travel two blocks south. Hollister-Stier is on the right, just before the new Rypien Field. Traveling north on Green St./Market, make a left on Euclid. Moving west, take the second right on Regal. Hollister-Stier is the large white building on the left, just past the new Rypien Field. Please enter through the employee entrance on the North side of the building.

Meeting Time: 5:30 p.m. FREE PIZZA (and free soda pop) will be provided on site by ASQ and the American Chemical Society. If you have any questions please contact Dennis DeMattia at 509-926-8848, or Jeff Moore at 509-489-5656 Ext. 4529.

I want to thank the many of you who came to our last meeting, where the speaker was the President of the ACS. We had at least 20 people there, probably more. And the talk was a lot better than I had been expecting.

We now have a Section Website, www.gonzaga.edu/inlandACS. The motivating factor was really your favorite subject, our NORM conference in 2002. However, since it is there, we will use it for section announcements, old newsletters (no, these will never die), various and sundry copies of the silly Bylaws, upcoming announcements and whatever else rings your bell. So, if you really want to know when the meeting in October will be, just hit the web site. And if you really want to compare the old and the new bylaws, ditto, ditto, ditto.

And, don't forget NORM 2001, in Seattle, in June. You can register by going to www.acs.org, finding the Regional Meetings section, whip out a credit card and fill out a form.
