There once lived a rainbow high up in the sky. She loved to play with the fluffy clouds and bask in the sun. All of her colors were warm and bright, and the clouds loved to nap and play on her stripes. She was very beautiful.
One day the rainbow did not feel beautiful. She peered
into a puddle as a dark cloud passed and said, "Maybe I am
not so beautiful after all." She felt very sad.
Soon the clouds stopped playing and dozing on the rainbow's stripes. She felt more sad and more lonely every day. As she got sadder, her stripes began to fade. Soon she was nothing but a murky shade of gray.
Nobody paid any attention to what was left of the once beautiful rainbow. Even the sun stopped shining on her.
Then one night it began to rain. It rained all night and all day. "I miss the way the sun used to shine down on me and make me warm." said the rainbow sadly as she shivered in the rain. "And I miss having such wonderful bright stripes. But most of all, I miss the fluffy white clouds that used to nap and dose on my stripes. They were my best friends."
The rainbow began to cry. Tears rolled down her sides and formed a small lake. She opened her eyes and peered curiously into the pool of water that she had created. Then, to her surprise, one of her gray stripes turned red! Then another one turned orange, another yellow, then green, blue, indigo and violet! The rainbow had never felt such joy in her life!
The sun peeked out from a white cloud and shone brightly on the rainbow. The light hugged the rainbow with warmth and made her colors brighter and more beautiful than ever. The fluffy clouds jumped one by one onto her bold and colorful stripes. Everyone rejoiced at the happiness of the rainbow, and she was never ever sad again. Return to David K. DeWolf Home Page
